"Did you have a hard day or did you have a hard 5 minutes that you milked the rest of the day?" -David Blease
Yikes.
I listened to David ask this question this week and I thought I'd share it with you too.
This isn't about neglecting or ignoring things that are hard, but the two questions I'm pondering are...
1....What do we do with that "hard"? How do we carry it around?
C.S. Lewis write: "It's not the load the weighs you down, it's the way you carry it."
I've noticed how true this is in my own life. Especially with the hard things.
AND ... it's also worth asking...
2....How hard is it really?
Sometimes it is.
Sometimes, we make it harder than it needs to be.
In my experience, when I stew over that 5 minute hard moment for the rest of the day...
...I'm disconnected from everything else.
I've missed several opportunities to be with the other moments of the day.
The glimmers that bring joy.
The goodness right in front of me.
The connection with others.
I let my mind consume me.
We must take captive the thoughts we are thinking and not let them run around unchaperoned.
We must touch them with wisdom and truth and grace.
Letting that one hard moment fester without buffering it with wisdom can make all the difference in how we experience the rest of our day (week...year...life!)
This requires active participation.
Of mind and heart and spirit.
And each moment, each day, we get to choose.
Consider these questions
What do you do with the hard?
How do you carry it around?
How hard is it really?
What would wisdom say about this?
